US stocks lose more ground

US stocks lose more ground

Technology stocks fell especially hard, and shares of LinkedIn had their worst day in history.
Energy and consumer discretionary stocks fell as oil prices declined and investors continued to worry that the risk of the US economy slipping into recession, while low, is growing.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 211.61 points, or 1.3 per cent, to 16,204.97. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 35.40 points, or 1.9 per cent, to 1,880.05 and the Nasdaq composite dropped 146.41 points, or 3.3 per cent, to 4,363.14.

Govt earnings from DSE down 16pc in 7 months

Govt earnings from DSE down 16pc in 7 months

Babul Barman
The government revenue earnings from the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) fell 16 per cent in the first seven months of the current fiscal year compared to the same period of the previous fiscal as trading volume was on the decline. The government bagged tax worth Tk 955.73 million in July-January period of the fiscal year 2015-2016, which was Tk 1,135.18 million in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, according to statistics from the DSE. The government earned the amount on TREC (trading right entitlement certificate) holders' commission and share sales by sponsor-directors and placement holders. Of the total earnings in the first seven months of the current fiscal, Tk 668.21 million came from the TREC holders' commission and Tk 287.52 million came from the share sales by sponsor-directors and placement holders, the DSE data showed. The DSE, on behalf of the government, collects the tax as TREC holders' commission and share sales by sponsor-directors and placement holders at the rate of 0.05 per cent and 5.0 per cent respectively and deposits the amount to the government exchequer. On the other hand, the government earned Tk 1,135.18 million in July-January period of the fiscal year 2014-15. However, the month-on-month the government earnings from the DSE rose by 40 per cent in January compared to the month of December as sponsor/directors shares sales increased significantly, which helped higher revenue collection. In January, the government received revenue worth Tk 155.42 million while the revenue collection in December was Tk 110.66 million. "Though the month-on-month revenue collection rose substantially in January, overall revenue collection declined due to lower transactions following the sluggish trend in stock prices," said a DSE official. "A bearish trend in the capital market affected the government's earnings from the stock trading as the trading volume was on the decline," he said. The daily average turnover on the DSE came down to Tk 4.22 billion in the outgoing calendar year which was Tk 4.99 billion in 2014, the DSE data showed. DSEX, the benchmark index of the DSE, also lost 235 points or 4.84 per cent last calendar year compared to the previous year. "The earnings are related to turnover. It's usual that tax will fall if turnover declines," said an analyst at a leading stockbroker. The turnover marked a decline in the seven months of the current fiscal, compared to same period last fiscal, so did tax," he said. DSE data showed that in the last three fiscal years, the revenue earnings of the government from the stock market declined due to slide in stock prices. The government revenue collection from DSE was Tk 2.72 billion in the fiscal year 2011-12, Tk 1.27 billion in the fiscal year 2012-13, Tk 1.54 billion in the fiscal year 2013-14 and Tk 1.74 billion in the fiscal year 2014-15. However, the highest revenue collection of Tk 4.47 billion was in the fiscal year 2010-11, when the market was bullish. babulfexpress@gmail.com

HSBC to pay $470 mn for mortgage abuses

HSBC to pay $470 mn for mortgage abuses

HSBC Holdings Plc will pay $470 million to settle parallel US federal and state civil charges alleging the bank's mortgage servicing arm engaged in abusive foreclosure and loan origination practices, the New York Attorney General's office said on Friday, reports Reuters.
The mortgage settlement resolves claims brought against the London-based bank by the Justice Department, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and 49 states plus the District of Columbia.
The New York Attorney General's office said the HSBC accord largely mirrored a 2012 national mortgage settlement that federal and state officials struck with five of the country's largest banks, including Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase & Co.
The national mortgage settlement came in the aftermath of the 2007-2009 housing crisis, when many people lost their homes to foreclosure.
The mortgage servicing investigation started after evidence emerged late in 2010 that banks had robo-signed thousands of foreclosure documents without properly reviewing paperwork.
The HSBC agreement requires the company to provide various types of relief to mortgage holders, such as principal reductions and refinancing for underwater mortgages.
Some borrowers who may have been harmed by the bank's mortgage servicing practices may also be eligible to receive payments through a national $59.3 million fund.
HSBC also needs to undertake certain corrective actions.
For instance, it must not foreclose on homeowners being considered for a loan modification and must give those people a chance to appeal denials.
HSBC must also install an independent monitor to review compliance with the settlement, which will be entered into a federal court in Washington, D.C.
"There has to be one set of rules for everyone, no matter how rich or how powerful, and that includes lenders who engage in abusive business practices," New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in a statement.
His office said New York had about 136,000 borrowers who may be eligible to reap the financial benefits from Friday's settlement. HSBC serviced the loans of these borrowers, who later lost their homes between 2008 and 2012.

US labour market on solid ground

US labour market on solid ground

US employment gains slowed more than expected in January as the boost to hiring from unseasonably mild weather faded, but rising wages and an unemployment rate at an eight-year low suggested the labour market recovery remains firm, reports Reuters.
Non-farm payrolls increased by 151,000 jobs and the unemployment rate slipped one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.9 per cent, the lowest since February 2008, the Labour Department said on Friday. The payrolls gain was a sharp step-down from the average 231,000 jobs per month during the fourth quarter.
"The fact that payroll gains fell back to earth is not necessarily a bad sign. Most indications are that the job market in the US is on solid footing and improving," said Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS in Lexington, Massachusetts.
Economists had forecast employment increasing by 190,000 in January and the jobless rate steady at 5 per cent. The economy added 2,000 fewer jobs in November and December than previously reported.
On top of a 0.5 per cent jump in average hourly earnings, which was the biggest gain in a year, employers increased hours for workers.
Manufacturing, which has been undermined by a strong dollar and weak global demand, added the most jobs since August 2013.
Economists said the combination of strong wage growth and falling unemployment suggested a March interest rate increase from the Federal Reserve could not be completely ruled out.
The dollar rose against a basket of six major currencies on the data after hitting a roughly 15-week low on Thursday. Prices for US government debt initially fell, but pared losses as stocks on Wall Street extended their decline.
"The lower unemployment rate and rising wages further support the view that the labour market is doing nothing but tightening," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pennsylvania. "Clearly, there are more uncertainties today than when the Fed raised rates in December and hinted that there could be four increases this year. But the labour market is absolutely not one of them."
Tightening financial market conditions and signs that both the domestic and global economies were slowing had undercut the case for a Fed rate hike next month and lowered the probability of monetary policy tightening this year.
The US central bank raised its short-term interest rate in December for the first time in nearly a decade.
Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen has said the economy needs to create just under 100,000 jobs a month to keep up with growth in the working-age population.
The economy, especially voters' perceptions of their job prospects, will likely be an issue in the November elections. President Barack Obama lauded the labour market progress.
"This progress is finally starting to translate into bigger paychecks. The United States of America right now has the strongest, most durable economy in the world," Obama told reporters at the White House.
Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus, however, said the economy was "still failing the millions of Americans who have given up looking for work."
January's softer job gains were payback after the warmest temperatures in years bolstered hiring in weather-sensitive sectors like construction.
January employment also lost the lift from the hiring of couriers and messengers, which was buoyed in November and December by strong online holiday sales.
The economy grew at a 0.7 per cent annual rate in the fourth quarter, restrained by headwinds that included the strong dollar and efforts by businesses to sell off inventory.
A separate report from the Commerce Department showed the buoyant dollar cutting into exports in December, causing the trade deficit to widen 2.7 per cent to $43.4 billion.
In January, the unemployment rate fell even as more people entered the labour force. The labour force participation rate, or the share of working-age Americans who are employed or at least looking for a job rose one-tenth of a percentage point to 62.7 per cent. It remains near four-decade lows.
Low participation could crimp job growth as the supply of labour shrinks, unless a strong rise in wages lures more people back into the labour force.
The private sector accounted for all employment gains in January, adding 158,000 positions.
The services sector created 118,000 jobs, the fewest in 10 months. That was because temporary help services fell 25,200 and courier and messenger employment declined by 14,400 jobs. Hiring in these categories normally rises during the holiday season.
Educational services lost 38,500 jobs, but retail payrolls added a strong 57,700 positions. Hiring could slow in the months ahead after a number of retailers, including Walmart (WMT.N) and Macy's (M.N) announced dozens of store closures.
The embattled manufacturing sector surprisingly added 29,000 jobs last month, while mining laid off 7,000 more workers. Mining payrolls have decreased by 146,000 since peaking in September 2014. About three-fourths of the job losses over this period have been in support activities for mining.
Further losses are likely after a report on Thursday showed energy firms in January announced plans to lay off 20,246 workers. Oil prices have plunged about 70 per cent in the last 18 months, forcing firms like oilfield services provider Schlumberger (SLB.N) to slash their workforces.
Construction payrolls rose 18,000, cooling off after adding 146,000 jobs in the fourth quarter. Government employment fell 7,000.

The question of investments

probing eyes

The question of investments

Mahmudur Rahman

The age-old tug-of-war in concepts would appear to have become of topical interest as far as investments are concerned. Crumbling economies battling suppressed consumer demand and supply gluts are forcing a pull-back on investment funds. The vicious cycle of budget deficits are forcing more and more countries to off-load white elephants in an attempt to woo investors who are careful where they put their money.
Russia, feeling the ice more than their seasonal winters are putting Aeroflot up for sale, chillingly similar to that what was forced on the Greek government. With the major developing economies such as China reining in their infrastructure spending, commodity exporters such as Brazil are feeling the pinch.
And new news on investment appetite would suggest that it is brands that have grown in appeal. For all the economic woes football stadiums in Europe, especially those of the big teams are packed to the rafters. The English Premier League has seen over a billion pounds being spent on player transfers and this is set to increase next year on the back of a mouth-watering £8.0 billion TV Rights deal that has been struck. The spoils are demarcated so as to provide clubs the incentive of spending money on players and management in order to stay in the top flight. And as good results means sales of tickets and merchandise, it's a lure for investors. Chinese businessmen have already bought shares in English and Spanish Clubs but the news is that following US,, Russian, Thailand, Middle-Eastern interests, it may be Chinese businesses' turn to buy-up a club. Through all the economic woes, Spain and Greece's football clubs didn't have problems paying the exorbitant salaries of their players. Surprisingly, the apparently penniless people of these countries can still find the money to pay for the bit-so-cheap tickets. What is of greater interest is that investors are seeing prospects, if not immediately then in the future.
The fact is that football is so much a part of life in Europe, be it at club or national levels that its interest is engrained in people's pulses. And just as money begets money, the inherent shopaholic cannot but be swayed to purchase merchandise in support of their teams and players.
These are the areas that need to be explored for prospective investments at home and abroad. The newest investments in start-ups are aimed at easing people's lives in terms of convenience as well as catering to that which they hold close to their hearts. Football is one. Cricket has gone out of control and the game is heading for uncertain quagmires. The money is pouring in but the game has degraded into a picnic where skills and tactics are losing out to economics. And it can only be a matter of time before the appeal of glitter wears out.

LinkedIn shares falls almost 44 pc

LinkedIn shares falls almost 44 pc

Investors gave LinkedIn a poor job review on Friday in the form of a dramatic sell-off that wiped out nearly US$11 billion in the professional networking site's market value.

A forecast for slower growth in the current year sent LinkedIn shares into a stomach-turning plunge of almost 44 per cent.

After the market closed Thursday, the online company reported ‘better than expected’ earnings for the last quarter but warned that revenue would fall short of what analysts had projected for 2016. It also said it was discontinuing a new online advertising system that hadn't worked out.

Several analysts noted that LinkedIn has a track record of issuing conservative forecasts and later beating them, but this time investors were shaken by the company's financial guidance. The stock closed Friday at US$108.38 after its worst slide since LinkedIn went public in 2011.

LinkedIn said it expects revenue of about US$3.6 billion to US$3.65 billion for 2016, while analysts surveyed by FactSet were projecting sales of US$3.9 billion.

The company's forecast implies the once fast-growing business expects sales to increase in the low 20 per cent range this year, falling into the teens in 2017, according to a report by analyst Neil Doshi of Mizuho Securities. The firm downgraded its investment rating on LinkedIn's stock to "neutral" from "buy" on Friday.

Mizuho had been expecting LinkedIn to post 30 percent sales growth for 2016 and mid-20 per cent growth for 2017.

"Clearly, we were wrong," Doshi said.

LinkedIn blamed economic uncertainty in Europe and Asia, in part, for slowing growth in its core job-recruiting business. Unlike other social networks that rely primarily on advertising sales, LinkedIn gets about 60 per cent of its revenue from licensing fees for software that employers and recruiters use to find job candidates. The remaining revenue comes from advertising and subscription fees.

The Mountain View, California-based company said it will continue investing to expand around the world. Analysts say LinkedIn should see increased revenue from online training courses and new software that commercial sales representatives can use to drum up business from their online contacts.

But the company also said it was overhauling its digital ad business and phasing out one ad program launched last year, because it had not performed as expected. That will cause the company to forego some revenue in the coming months, executives warned, according to AP. - Idrak

Importers move to curb illegal inflow of handsets

Importers move to curb illegal inflow of handsets

Mobile importers have moved to curb the inflow of unregistered and smuggled handsets into Bangladesh.
There are currently 8.92 crore handsets in the market, about 30 percent of which were brought in through illegal channels, depriving the government of about Tk 200 crore in duties a year, according to Bangladesh Mobile Phone Importers' Association or BMPIA.
The BMPIA will introduce hologram stickers to tag legally registered handsets, said Rezwanul Haque, general secretary of the importers' platform.
The association also plans to set up an automated no-objection certification (NOC) process with the telecom regulator to empower customers to check their handsets' provenance.
After establishing a database with the NOCs as well as the approved International Mobile Station Equipment Identity or IMEI, which is a 15-digit unique number for every handset, it will also help ensure security, Haque said.
“We will also soon introduce a five-digit short code, where users can call to check their handsets' IMEI numbers. They also can verify the IMEI on our website.”
State Minister for Telecom Tarana Halim will launch the database in a ceremony at the Westin Dhaka on February 9.  However, the association is not planning to take any action against the unregistered handsets currently in use, officials said.

“For now, we are focused on digitising the registration process, and may use it for regulatory purposes after the database is properly enriched over the next few years,” Haque said.
Some 50,000 handsets are stolen or lost in Bangladesh every year, and a proper database will help with recovery and curb related crimes, the association said.
Currently, fake IMEI are not detectable in Bangladesh, which makes it easy to use those to carry out criminal acts like kidnapping, officials said, for which they are working to stop the inflow of such fake IMEI handsets.
Bangladesh imported 2.59 crore handsets last year, with 15 percent year-on-year growth.
On December 16 last year, all mobile phone operators began the re-registration process for all subscriber identity modules or SIMs through the biometric system, also to boost security.

Money market remains liquid

Money market remained liquid throughout the week, with slight pressure on the last day of the week as inter-bank participants took part in the bidding in BB auction. The market became liquid when the central bank accepted only 50 per cent of bid volume. The Bangladesh Bank is maintaining money supply scenario in the market through treasury securities, although this stance is a short term solution and not conducive in the long run. As the government has surplus funds at its dis-posal it is borrowing much less than expected by the market through the auction of treasury securities. Call money rate remains within the range of 3.00 per cent and 4.00 per cent with little indication of upwards or downwards movement in the course of the next 3 months.
Interest rate scenario in the market has spurred credit growth as lending rates have fallen significantly. Accordingly banks are adjusting their deposit rates dissuading the retail base from keeping their deposits in banks. Cus-tomers are increasingly looking towards other avenues of investment such as National Savings Certificate. Private sector credit growth has seen the highest ever growth rate of 14.91% due to the conducive borrowing rates. BB bill maturity of BDT 2850 crore could create future liquidity in the market in the short term. However, subsequent issuance of securities by the central bank is expected, keeping the market rate stable. Market will remain within 3.00%-4.00% over the course of the next 3-4 months given the central bank manages excess liquidity through issuance of securities. Rate moved upto Tk 78.70 as market started short covering as central bank continued their purchase of USD. Interbank outright volume has increased more than previous month. With stable market liquidity scenario, Bangladesh Bank reserve remained above USD 27 billion as they bought USD 108 mio already this year. The inward flow of remittances has been on a downturn with the January receipts dropping more than 12.0%, from the previous month. According to a BRAC Bank review, USDBDT price stabilized around 78.75/80 level. Further depreciation in INR and CNY might influence central bank to depre-ciate BDT against USD further towards 79.00, the weekly review of BRAC Bank said.

EXIM Bank to back US cos' investment in BD

US Export-Import Bank Chairman and President Fred Hochberg has called for easing the process of doing business in Bangladesh, as the bank wants to assist the US companies looking for investment in the country.
"There are huge investment opportunities in the country's infrastructure, especially in the areas of renewable energy, power and air transportation," said the US EXIM Bank chief.
He was speaking at a luncheon programme on "The Bangladesh Opportunity: How the EXIM Bank of the USA and Bangladesh can partner to Advance Economic Growth" at The Westin Dhaka on Thursday. The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Bangladesh organised the programme.
It was also addressed, among others, by US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat, and Amcham president Md. Nurul Islam and vice president Showkat Ali Sarkar.
The EXIM Bank chief said the US companies are especially interested to invest in Bangladesh to help the country meet its ambitious infrastructure investment goals.
He, however, stressed on the need for focusing more on governance issue.
He also called for making the country's environment more business-friendly, so that foreign entrepreneurs can invest here easily, and hinted that there will be no investment unless infrastructures are developed.
Mr Hochberg also praised vibrant private sector, role of NRBs in economic development, and participation of women in national development activities, including women leadership, saying it might contribute immensely to the growth of national economy.
The US ambassador, terming foreign investment critically important for Bangladesh, said the investments through bringing high technology would help the country's manufacturing sector greatly.
"FDI could bring the US world-class technologies and skills to help the country diversify its exports, better connect its market to neighbours and beyond, and seize opportunities in an increasingly interlinked global economy."
"Bangladesh is becoming an important trade partner of the US and a bigger consumer market. The US export and investment are increasing here with rise in its consumer market," she added.
The visiting chairman and president of US EXIM Bank said his bank is ready to assist the US firms looking for new business opportunities in Bangladesh.
"I am meeting with the government officials and business leaders to assure them that US Export-Import Bank is here to assist the American firms compete for Bangladeshi business."
The EXIM Bank chief is now on a two-day official visit to Bangladesh as part of his first international trip in 2016.
Mr Hochberg said he has chosen Bangladesh for his maiden visit in 2016, as the country's growing economy and rising consumer demand make it a place where the US businesses want to compete.
Over the past six years, he has been working to increase global presence of the US exporters in various fields, such as - renewable energy, construction and farm machinery, medical technology, and avionics.
"With a growing middle-class and vibrant entrepreneurs, Bangladesh economy is growing fast."
He focuses on EXIM Bank's investment opportunities in Bangladesh, and described how the bank is assisting the country in purchasing Boeing aircraft.
Mr Hochberg said the US EXIM Bank financed the cash-troubled Biman Bangladesh Airlines acquire four Boeing 777-300ER long-range passenger aircraft.
"Bangladesh's economic expansion demands for long-range flights that are safe, cheap, and fuel-efficient. Biman's new Boeing jets will help meet that demand."
"We look forward to building relationships with my colleagues and friends in Bangladesh, so that together we can shape a bright future for the middle-class and deliver on our shared responsibility to the next generation."
Asked about their investment in Bangladesh, the US banker said about 90 per cent of their investment is in SME sector. They did not invest in infrastructure, as it needs long-term investment.
